I was recently talking with a friend who wants to get fast results and lose weight from working out on his elliptical exercise machine. He’s not really in shape – yet, but wants to speed up the process. Here’s the advice a personal trainer gave him.
Try to get conditioned slowly if you want to stay in shape for the long term. If you work way too hard in the beginning and expect fast results – you might be disappointed. Start slowly at first, only exercising at a comfortable pace for you. You really want to be successful, long-term, and if you rush it, you may get burn-out.
Watch your diet – don’t eat a bunch of stuff that is not good for you. I know – this sounds like your mother talking, but the truth is, if you want great output, you must have great input. And that means the best foods. Exercise alone won’t get you in shape – you must provide good nutrition. Even athletes can be overweight from poor eating habits.
For the best results, you should cut out high fructose corn syrup in your diet. High fructose corn syrup – that stuff is poison. It messes with your metabolism, can cause diabetes and can make it much more difficult to lose weight and get in shape. Here’s the Wikipedia lowdown on high fructose corn syrup.
Also, watch the sugars and heavy starches you’re eating. You need the right carbohydrates to get in shape using your elliptical exercise machine. The better carbs to eat are the long-lasting ones, like whole-grain pastas, brown rice and legumes (beans). Also, nuts (almonds are great) can provide some great healthy carbohydrates too.
It would be a shame to put forth the effort and spoil the results by eating the wrong foods.
